3G Development in China August 3-9

- Chinese telecom operator China Unicom announced that the company recently plans to expand the deployment of WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) network in other 50 cities of seven provinces, reaching a total WCDMA network coverage of 334 cities, the Sina Tech News reported on August 5. The investment is valued at 1.5 billion RMB (US$220.6 million; US$1 = 6.8 RMB), of which 1.1 billion RMB (US$161.8 million) will be allocated for wireless network deployment and 400 million RMB (US$58.8 million) for transmission facilities. So far, China Unicom had initiated two phases of WCDMA network deployment, with its network coverage including 56 cities in the first phase and 288 cities in the second.

- China Mobile recently confirmed that the company will set up a TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) industrial park in the Xiaoshan District of Hangzhou city, Zhenjiang province, the Sina Tech News reported on August 3, adding that the company will spend one billion RMB (US$147.1 million) into the first-phase of construction. Covering an area of around 133,300 square meters, the new facility - to be located in the Xiaoshan Economic & Technological Development Zone - is set to complete construction in 2012 and begin operations in 2014, according to the same source.

- Guangdong Mobile, the subsidiary of China Mobile in Guangdong, has entered into a cooperation agreement with the Heyuan municipal government, Guangdong province, the SinoCast Daily Business Beat reported on August 4. Pursuant to the agreement, Guangdong Mobile will earmark another 2.2 billion RMB (US$323.5 million) over the next five years for the implementation of nine programs, including TD-SCDMA, together with the said municipal government, according to the same source. In the past five years, Guangdong Mobile had invested 1.5 billion RMB (US$220.6 million) in Heyuan.

Meanwhile, China Unicom also signed a similar agreement with the Heyuan municipal government, whereby China Unicom plans to inject around 600 million RMB (US$88.2 million) into the city in order to help the said government in economic development and IT deployment.
